Dartmouth College v Woodward

In 1816, the New Hampshire state legislature attempted to change Dartmouth College from a privately supported institution to a public state run university by removing the college's trustees and transferring power to the state government.

In a 6-to-1 decision, Chief Justice John Marshall's majority opinion ruled that the Dartmouth College's charter was a contract between private parties that could not be altered by the state. - AsNotedIn
