Charles Delucena Meigs

Born in St George, Bermuda, on 29 February 1792, Dr Charles Delucena Meigs was an American obstetrician notable for his voluminous writings on medicine, his opposition to obstetrical anesthesia and his belief that physicians' hands could not transmit disease to their patients because doctors were gentlemen. Obtaining his medicine degree at the University of Pennsylvania in 1817, Meigs became professor of obstetrics and diseases of women in the Jefferson Medical College in 1841 where he stayed until his retirement in 1861. - AsNotedIn
