Josiah Bent

  • American

In 1801 Josiah Bent, an enterprising sea captain, baked ship biscuits in Dutch ovens located in his Milton home. These thin, crisp biscuits made a crackling sound as they cooled, and Mr Bent aptly dubbed his creation "cracker" which became an original American word. He sold his goods, the Bent Water Crackers, from his saddlebag to ship merchants in Boston Harbor. - NPS
