Matthew Lewis was an English novelist and dramatist, often referred to as Monk Lewis, because of the success of his classic Gothic novel, The Monk. He was educated at Westminster School and Christ Church, Oxford. Matthew Lewis served as attache to the British embassy at The Hague and was a member of Parliament from 1796 to 1802. Matthew Lewis wrote The Monk when he was only 19 years old.
