Legion of the United States
American
Part of
Legion of the United States was the first standing army of the new United States. After the American Revolution, except for one regiment on the Western Frontier and one battery of artillery at West Point, the Continental Army was disbanded. Congress thought that the state militias would be all the nation would need as a military force. Congress decided to create the Legion 1791 after disastrous defeats of State Militias by an Indian Confederacy in October 1790. - AsNotedIn
