Sondermarken
- English: The Southern Field
- Address: Pile Alle
- Vicinity: Roskildevej
Sondermarken is an urban park in the Frederiksberg neighborhood of Copenhagen, Denmark. The open space includes a portion of the Copenhagen ZOO, grass lawns and tree-lined paths.
The Cisterns in Sondermarken are former water reservoirs near the center of the park reborn as a unique art venue. The Cisterns, gloomy and cold, use to hold 16 million liters of drinking water. Typically closed between December and March, there are no toilets, but there are a plenty of steps in the atmospheric venue.
East of the Cisterns, is the Mindehojen, or Memorial Mound, a monument of earth and stone dedicated to Danes who emigrated from their homeland. Inside the mound, a circular room contains a statue of a woman, representing Mother Denmark, holding two infants. Nine base reliefs on the wall depict people in various activities common to the life of an emigrant in the nineteenth century. The artistic space is only open to the public one day a year, July 4th, American Independence Day. - AsNotedIn
