1787/00/00 Armistead Churchill Home locale Armstead Churchill and family settle on the large tract of land in Kentucky, south of the Forks of the Ohio, which he calls Blenheim. His great-grandson will build Churchill Downs on part of this estate.
1795/09/13 Armistead Churchill Died Armistead Churchill dies in Jefferson County, Kentucky. Mr Churchill is buried at his Blenheim Plantation, south of Louisville, Kentucky.
1874/00/00 Meriwether Lewis Clark Developer The track at Churchill Downs is constructed by Meriwether Lewis Clark, a Louisville thoroughbred breeder, in an attempt to stimulate the thoroughbred industry, which is in a period of decline.
1875/05/17 In front of a crowd of about 10,000, Oliver Lewis, a black jockey on a colt named ARISTIDES beats out 14 three-year-old horses to win the First Kentucky Derby, 1.5 mi (2.4 km). Mint Julep
1921/05/08 Stephen Collins Foster Songwriter The Louisville Courier-Journal reports the victory of the Kentucky-owned and bred Behave Yourself "To the strains of 'My Old Kentucky Home,' Kentuckians gave vent their delight. For Kentucky triumphed in the Derby."
1936/05/02 Stephen Collins Foster Songwriter Since 1936, with only a few exceptions, "My Old Kentucky Home," by Stephen Foster has been performed by the University of Louisville Marching Band as the horses make their way from the paddock to the starting gate for the Kentucky Derby.
