1847/00/00 A large home is built at 29 E Washington St for Dr Hannibal R Stevens and his wife Sarah (rear of building). About 1915, the commercial front half will be added to the Stevens residence.
1855/00/00 38-40 N Main St is built in Martinsville. 40 N Main St retains late C19 cast iron post.
1857/00/00 Begun in 1856 by James Cunningham, 10-20-28 North Main St business block is completed for Samuel Tucker as the Mason House. In 1895, it will be known as the Grand Hotel.
1860/00/00 The two story brick 110 N Main St is built for Dr Robert H Tarleton, a physician and druggist. The third floor will be added in 1900. From 1932 to 1984, it will be John S Kivett's Five and Dime.
1870/00/00 78 and 88 East Morgan Street are built in for merchant Henry Sims. From 1926 to 1993 78 E Morgan was a drugstore and soda fountain operated by Robert and Emmett Phelps.
1875/00/00 165 East Morgan St is built. The storefront has been greatly modified.
1875/00/00 33 E Washington St is built in the Italianate style, featuring a cast-iron cornice.
1887/00/00 The discovery of mineral springs makes Martinsville a destination for the ill of health.
1890/00/00 The Preston Hotel is built at 189 N Mulberry St.
1891/00/00 First Christian Church is built at 3 S Main St with a cross-gabled roof and a cruciform plan. A Bennett pipe organ will be installed in 1894-1895.
1893/00/00 Independent Order of Odd Fellows Owner Independent Order of Odd Fellows block is built in the Italianate style at 110-128 East Morgan Street.
1917/00/00 Built c 1860, J C Hale, owner of the Martinsville Brick Company, remodels 96 N Main St with oriental brick, a dark brown brick with shades of green, red, and orange from his Martinsville Brick Co, and limestone blocks.
1948/00/00 J J Newberry Company Store J J Newberry acquires the Singleton Building at 15 N Jefferson St. Built in the Italianate style c 1870, the entrances date from the late 1930s or later.
