1848/00/00 Philip St George Cocke Supporter Francis H Smith, with the enthusiastic support of VMI Board of Visitors member Philip St George Cocke, begins to secure funding for building projects, including a new Barracks.
1851/07/04 Alexander Jackson Davis Architect The cornerstone was laid for a new barracks at VMI. Francis H Smith worked with Davis to finalize plans for a massive brick and stucco structure, a quadrangle which is to measure 225 by 326 feet.
1851/09/24 Cadets occupy the quarters at the VMI Barracks. The front, or south, facade (today's Washington Arch facade) is completed.
1851/10/00 Thomas J Jackson Work Professor of Natural Philosophy, Major Thomas J Jackson teaches cadets in a classroom in the VMI Barracks.
1853/09/00 Peachy Gilmer Breckinridge Education Master Breckinridge enters the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia.
1864/06/12 Gen David Hunter Union General Union troops commanded by General David Hunter burn the barracks at the Virginia Military Institute.
1866/00/00 Moses Jacob Ezekiel Education Moses Ezekiel graduates from Virginia Military Institute
1869/00/00 VMI Barracks are rebuilt and the east wing is completed, 1866-1869.
1897/09/11 George C Marshall Education George Marshall matriculates at VMI bearing a note from his father to Superintendent Scott Shipp: I send you my youngest, and last. He is bright, full of life, and I believe will get along very well. George's room in the barracks is 202.
1914/00/00 Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue Architect Goodhue recommends the removing the structures not design by Davis and returning to Davis's original plan of a quadrangle with a symmetrical facade.
1923/00/00 Alexander Jackson Davis Architect The north wing of the VMI Barracks are constucted. The quadrangle is now completed largely as envisioned by A J Davis and Francis H Smith.
