Hall House, also known as the McNeely-Strachan House, is a mansion museum open to public tours that feature original furnishings, wallpapers, painted ceilings, and a desk used by Andrew Jackson when he studied law in Salisbury in the 1780's. 1785/11/06 Andrew Jackson Education Andrew Jackson studies law in Salisbury under Spruce Macay, 1784-85. He was admitted to the bar in Rowan County 6 Nov 1787. His desk is in Hall House.
1820/00/00 Dr Josephus Hall House is originally built as classrooms for the Salisbury Female Academy (1820-1825).
1825/00/00 Businessman Maxwell Chambers and his half-sister Rebecca Troy buy the property and make it their home. The restored kitchen building and the slave dwelling date from 1825.
1859/00/00 Dr Josephus Hall buys the home and transform it into a grand Southern residence. Dr Hall was a medical doctor at the Salisbury Confederate Prison. His pardon from President Andrew Johnson hang in the upstairs hallway.
1865/04/12 George Stoneman Headquarters General Stoneman and his Raiders capture Salisbury. Stoneman uses Hall as his headquarters. A cannon once used at Salisbury's Civil War Prison is at Hall House.
1972/00/00 McNeely-Strachan House serves four generations of the Hall family before it is bought by Historic Salisbury Foundation, along with many of its original contents, from Hall's great granddaughter.
