Denmark Vesey House

  • Travel Genus: Sight
  • Sight Category: Building

This small frame house was the residence of Denmark Vesey (1767-1822), a free Black Charleston carpenter whose 1822 plans for a slave insurrection created mass hysteria throughout the Carolinas and beyond. Until then, owners may have feared revolts from their slaves, but thought they had little cause to expect trouble from free blacks. Able to travel around Charleston on his own, Vesey carefully selected a group of followers and planned his rebellion for July 14. A slave informant betrayed the news to his owner, and the plot was thwarted. Ultimately 313 alleged participants were arrested, 67 were convicted and 35 of those were executed. Vesey was sentenced to death on July 2, two weeks before his revolt was to have taken place. - NRHP, 11 MAy 1976

Ok, that was 1976, since then, evidence has shown that 56 Bull St was not Vesey's house, the actual house is most likely gone but it was along Bull Street at one time. - Phantom
