The Piedmont Manufacturing Company, established by Henry Pinckney Hammett, helped spur the growth of the Southern textile industry after the Civil War. Hammett's company served as a model and inspiration for other entrepreneurs and investors, and led to the rapid development of Southern textile manufacturing in the last quarter of the nineteenth century.

A fire in October 1983 destroyed much of Piedmont Number One; the ruins of the building were subsequently dismantled. - NPS

1876/00/00 Woodward, Baldwin and Company Work 'Woodward, Baldwin and Company' helps to reestablish the Piedmont Mill in Piedmont, SC , handling most of the sales the products: shirting, sheeting drills and yarns.
1876/03/00 Henry Pinckney Hammett Founder Henry Hammett puts Piedmont Manufacturing Company mill Number One into operation with a water wheel providing power for 5000 spindles and 112 looms.
1883/00/00 By 1883, with 25,796 spindles and 554 looms, Piedmont is the largest mill in South Carolina.
1888/00/00 Henry Pinckney Hammett Work Hammett has Piedmont Number Two built on the west bank of the Saluda River. The tower remains.
1900/00/00 At an oyster supper at the Piedmont Hotel, James J Orr, Piedmont Mill president and Hammett's son-in-law, reports on the mill and its surrounding village of 3,750 people.
1983/10/00 A fire in destroys much of Piedmont Number One. The ruins of the building were subsequently dismantled, leaving the tower.
