1730/00/00 Peter Brown builds a house (left side of current structure).
1760/00/00 Located on one of America's oldest highways, the Boston Post Road, Timothy Wetmore, son of Rev James Wetmore, begins operating Square House as an inn and tavern.
1770/00/00 Dr Ebenezer Haviland, a surgeon and a barber, buys the Square House. Dr Haviland also acted as town supervisor, town clerk and leader of the Rye Patriots.
1774/00/00 John Adams Visitor During 1774, John and Samuel Adams stay at the Square House as they travel to and from the Continental Congress.

1774/08/10 At a meeting probably held at the Dr Haviland's House, Rye residents form a committee, headed by Dr Haviland, to support the Continental Congress in Philadelphia and protest taxation without representation.
1775/08/04 Dr Haviland is made a surgeon in the Continental Army, remaining in the military until his death on 28 July 1781 in Connecticut. It is not known whether he died of battle wounds or disease.
1779/00/00 Mrs Haviland, having fled the Square House during the American Revolution, returns, operating the tavern and inn until 1799.
1789/10/15 George Washington Guest President Washington stops at Widow Haviland's, writing in his diary: After dinner, through frequent light showers we proceeded to the Tavern of a Mrs Haviland at Rye, who keeps a very neat and decent Inn.... United States of America's First Presidential Tour
1789/11/12 George Washington Guest GW notes in his diary: A little after sunrise we left Marvin's, at Fairfield, and breakfast at Stamford, 13 miles distance, reached the Widow Haviland's, 12 miles further: where on acct of some lame hose, we remained all night. 1824/08/20 Marquis de Lafayette Guest Marquis de Lafayette dines at Penfield's Inn. Lafayette's Triumphal Tour of America
1835/00/00 David Mead, postmaster of Rye, buys Penfield's Inn, and turns it back into a private residence.
