1833/03/00 David Bates Douglass Engineer Major David Bates Douglass, engineering professor at West Point Military Academy, is appointed to survey and estimate the proposed route of the Croton Aqueduct.
1835/00/00 Henry M Francis Assistant Surveyor David Douglass and his successor, Chief Engineer John B Jervis, survey a route to bring water from the Croton River to New York City.
1837/00/00 John Bloomfield Jervis Architect Construction begins on the 41-mile system. Over the next 5 years, 3000 to 4000 workers, mostly Irish immigrants earning up to $1.00 per day, build a dam across the Croton River, construct masonry aqueducts, dig tunnels, lay pipe and erect reservoirs.
1842/10/14 James Renwick Jr Construction Supervisor The Croton Aqueduct opens to public use with great fanfare. The day-long celebration culminates in a fountain of water spouting to a height of 50 feet (15 m) from the decorative cast iron Croton Fountain in City Hall Park (razed).
1885/00/00 Construction on a New Croton Aqueduct begins in 1885 a few miles east. The new aqueduct went into service in 1890, with three times the capacity of the Old Croton Aqueduct. It currently supplies ten percent of New York City's water.
