1810/05/00 At an annual salary of $400, James Gould is appointed the first keeper at St Simons Lighthouse. He stayed until he retired in 1837.
1861/09/29 Confederate Glynn Guards Infantry Company blow up the Lighthouse to keep it out of the hands of the Union Navy. The Fresnel lens, installed in 1857, was dismantled and removed to the interior prior to demolition of the tower. It has never been located.
1868/00/00 Charles B Cluskey Contractor Architect Charles Cluskey begins working as a contractor on the St Simons Lighthouse.
1871/00/00 Charles B Cluskey Died Charles Cluskey dies of Malaria contracted on St Simons Island
1872/00/00 Orlando Metcalfe Poe Architect Second Lighthouse and Keeper's Dwelling completed. Orlando Poe, chief engineer for the US Lighthouse Board, supervised the design. Architect Charles Cluskey worked as contractor from 1868 until his death in 1871.
1975/00/00 The Coastal Georgia Historical Society spends three years restoring the two-story Victorian light keepers' cottage, located at the base of the lighthouse, which was then converted into a museum. In 1984, they leased the historic lighthouse structure.
