1852/07/13 John D Sloat Work Commodores JD Sloat and C Ringgold, Simon F Blunt and William PS Sanger (former overseer of construction of Drydock Number 1, Norfolk) recommend Mare island to be developed as a US Naval Yard.
1854/09/15 David Farragut Work Commander Farragut arrives at Mare Island to supervise the building of the Mare Island Navy Yard near San Francisco in San Pablo Bay.
1895/02/00 Union Iron Works Naval Architect Commissioned in February, Olympia departs the Union Iron Works yard in San Francisco and steams inland to the US Navy's Mare Island Naval Shipyard at Vallejo. When outfitting is completed, Captain John J Read will take command.
1917/03/00 Lothar Witzke Saboteur Barges loaded with munitions explode - killing 6 people, wounding 31 and destroying port facilities. Agents of US Military Intelligence tied the blast to roving German saboteur Lothar Witzke, who was caught and imprisoned in 1918.
1996/04/01 After the construction of over 500 naval vessels and the overhauling more than 1000 other boats, Mare Island Naval Shipyard is decommissioned on April Fool's Day.
2011/06/00 Paul Thomas Anderson Director In early June, Paul T Anderson begins shooting scenes for "The Master" at in Vallejo and Sacramento, CA. Filming on Mare Island for a month, they shot in a wing of the old hospital and the admiral's mansion. The Master (2012 film)
