1945/03/22 Eliel Saarinen Architect Board of trustees commission Eliel Saarinen to design the original Des Moines Art Center building. The building utilizes a limestone cladding quarried in Wisconsin known as Lannon stone.
1948/00/00 Des Moines Art Center opens.
1966/00/00 I M Pei Architect Trustees of the Des Moines Art Center select I M Pei to design an addition to the museum. The design is to provide space for the display of monumental sculpture, with gallery heights as much as twice those of the existing building. Completed in 1968.
1985/00/00 Richard Meier Architect The third wing is completed. In 1982, 5 architects were invited to a competition to design a new wing for the Art Center. Meier's building, an extroverted sculptural form, stands in contrast to both the horizontality of Saarinen and the humility of Pei.
