Thomastown is a Townland in County Kilkenny, province of Leinster, Republic of Ireland. Situated on the River Nore, Thomastown was a walled Norman town with a castle built by Strongbow's son-in-law in the 13th century. The only remaining parts of the fortress are the towers near each end of the bridge. The 13th century Grennan Castle, in ruins, is located on the riverbank, south of the bridge at the end of castle Avenue.
The River Nore, an EU-designated salmonoid river, is notable for its salmon and trout fishery. The river also is home to the eel-like lampreys, crayfish and otters. - AsNotedIn
