The Stolen White Elephant is a 1882 short story by Mark Twain that was inspired by a real life incident involving the remains of Alexander T Stewart, once one of the wealthiest men in America. In 1878, the robbing of Mr Stewart's grave was a sensational news story. Mark Twain wrote that The Stolen White Elephant was Left out of A Tramp Abroad, because it was feared that some of the particulars had been exaggerated, and that others were not true. Before these suspicions had been proven groundless, the book had gone to press. - AsNotedIn
