Borglum hires a plane to flies, over the State Game Lodge in Custer State Park where Coolidge is staying and drops a wreath with an to invitation for the President to the dedication of Mount Rushmore. The Coolidges had arrived in Rapid City on June 13th. |

The carving begins. Local gold miners remove rock using dynamite and jackhammers to remove the next layer. Carvers drill a series of shallow holes and remove the area between them, often by hand. Hand tools smoothed the stone and added details. |
