The McNeil River - State Game Sanctuary and Refuge is about 200 square miles (518 skm) of protected wilderness and wildlife habitat located 250 air miles (400 km) southwest of Anchorage and 100 air miles (160 km) west of Homer. Early July through mid-August, brown bears feed on migrating calico-colored chum (or dog salmon) at McNeil River Falls.
