The small brick cottage, situated on a hill near the site of Walton's Manor, is believed to date from 1784. It was built by General Matthew Walton, one of the earliest Kentucky settler's, who was also a prominent surveyor and politician. His land holdings were so vast that he was considered one of the wealthiest men in the state. The cottage later served as the law office of John Pope, a prominent and sometimes controversial politician and a respected lawyer, who served most of his life in state and national politics. - NRHP, 24 August 1977
