Fort Trumbull has served various defense, research, and education functions for the United States Army, Coast Guard and Navy since 1839, most recently as the Naval Undersea Warfare Center. The site is situated on a rock outcropping rising 30 feet above the Thames River and includes a fort built in 1839-1852. When the base was closed in 1990 under the military's Base Realignment and Closure process, the NPS Federal Lands to Parks Program transferred 16 acres to the State of Connecticut, including the main fort, other historic buildings and two piers, forming Fort Trumbull State Park. In addition to touring the historic fort, visitors can fish from the 500-foot pier and enjoy the scenery along the waterfront walk. - NPS
