1859/00/00 East Tennessee and Georgia Railroad Owner Chattanooga, Harrison, Georgetown and Charleston Railroad goes bankrupt constructing the Whiteside Tunnel. Their susccesor, the East Tennessee and Georgia Railroad, completes the structure the as part of their Chattanooga Branch.
1863/11/25 Patrick Cleburne Confederate General General Pat Cleburne's Rebel troops emerge from the Whiteside Tunnel, attack the Union troops from the rear, engage in a sharp engagement and retreat through the tunnel. Sherman blockaded the western opening preventing similar attacks.
