Alma Compton House
- Address: 142 S 100 East
This Victorian cottage was constructed in 1908 for Alma Compton, whose success and longevity as a photographer are unmatched in the Brigham City area. It was designed by noted architect Andrew Funk, who also designed the Box Elder County Courthouse among other buildings. Compton was born in England in 1856 and moved to Utah with family members in 1868. In 1882, he decided to become a photographer and worked for a year without pay to learn the trade. From 1884 to 1904, Compton was the primary photographer in Brigham City, and through these years his business enjoyed an unprecedented success. It was at the height of his success that this house was built as his principal residence. Compton's photograph collection of an estimated 3,500 glass negatives is unrivaled as the most important visual record of Brigham City and Box Elder County during this time and reflects his considerable skills as a photographer. - Marker
