1875/09/24 Samuel Hawkes and James Ryan leave their galena mine in the San Francisco Mountain Mining District and rest under a boulder outcrop. Casually chipping it with a pickax, they accidentally discover a high-grade lead sulfate mineral called anglesite.

1885/02/12 After the Horn Silver Mine night shift come to the surface, the day crew is told to wait due to earth tremors. Within minutes a massive cave-in closes the main shaft and collapses tunnels down to the 7th level, shutting off the richest part of the mine.
