Virginia is the only US state to establish its own navy and in 1777 they constructed the Chickahominy Shipyard at the mouth of the Chickahominy River where they built two ships and repaired or outfitted at least eight others. In 1781, British troops captured and burned the shipyard. The site includes the foundations of the residences, warehouses and slips and two submerged colonial shipwreck. Underwater archaeologist has recovered barred shot, cannon balls and rigging blocks. - AsNotedIn
