1922/01/06 Paul Philippe Cret Supervising Architect Construction begins on the Delaware River Bridge.
1925/05/00 John Viti, 24, falls into the Delaware River, and fellow construction worker, Robert Flynn, 39, dives in after him. Both men are killed by the propellers of a tugboat.
1926/00/00 Artist Leon Hermant creates the "Winged Victory", a gold leaf statue representing man's triumph over nature. Four of the 6 foot tall statues are set atop of the 45-foot pylons, bridge gateways.
1926/00/00 Leon Moisseiff Design Engineer At the peak of construction, 1,300 people worked on the Delaware River Bridge. Fifteen workers will 15 die during its construction.
1926/00/00 The bridge's anchorages are designed as trolley stations. A large transit hub was planned at the end of the bridge at 6th Street, Philadelphia. The waiting rooms' tile murals depicting modes of transportation are made by Enfield Pottery and Tile Works.
1926/05/00 Former World War I pilot, Howard Meyer, dies at age 29 after an acetylene torch explodes in his hands, knocking him backward off the bridge and into the Delaware River.
1926/06/00 Montgomery Case Construction Engineer The Delaware River Bridge is erected with 760,000 tons of structural steel and masonry. The length of the span is 7,456 feet from abutment to abutment.
1926/07/01 Ralph Modjeski Chief Engineer The Delaware River Bridge opens. The longest single span suspension bridge in the world was dedicated as part of the Sesquicentennial Exposition, celebrating the 150th anniversary of the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence.
1945/00/00 In the 1940s, a roadway widening project removes the bridge's pylons and the "Winged Victory" statues are placed in storage. The restored statues are located in the lobby of the Delaware River Port Authority at 2 Riverside Drive in Camden.
1984/00/00 Isamu Noguchi Artist The "Bolt of Lightning" sculpture by Isamu Noguchi is installed on Monument Plaza by the bridge's Philadelphia entrance. The original design for the 101-foot sculpture that commemorates Ben Franklin's kite experiment were begun in 1934.
