1925/08/00 Peter Norbeck Fundraiser Initial planning and fund-raising begins in August 1925 for the Mount Harney Memorial, but the project was almost out of money in 1927 before carving even began.
1927/08/10 Calvin Coolidge US President At the Mount Rushmore opening dedication, President Coolidge gives a speech promising federal funding for the National Memorial. He then gave Borglum six steel drill bits with which the artist would start carving the hill.
1927/10/04 Gutzon Borglum Sculptor The carving begins. Local gold miners remove rock using dynamite and jackhammers to remove the next layer. Carvers drill a series of shallow holes and remove the area between them, often by hand. Hand tools smoothed the stone and added details.
1936/00/00 Peter Norbeck Life President Roosevelt and Borglum make statements at the dedication of the Jefferson portrait. Senator Norbeck, suffering from cancer of the tongue and jaw, stood by mutely.
1936/00/00 Franklin D Roosevelt US President President Roosevelt and Borglum make statements at the dedication of the Jefferson portrait. Senator Norbeck, suffering from cancer of the tongue and jaw, stood by mutely.
1941/10/31 Lincoln Borglum Sculptor Mount Rushmore National Memorial is declared a completed project.
