The Cherokee Apartments are stylish, very stylish. They were originally built as the East River Homes, but they are historically known as the York Avenue Estate and Shively Sanitary Tenements. These four apartment blocks were developed by Dr Henry Shively and funded by Mrs William K Vanderbilt to offer healthy living environments for families with a member that suffers from tuberculosis. The architect, Henry Atterbury Smith, designed the buildings to maximize air-flow, a popular treatment at the time. Mr Smith ultimately deemed the apartments a failure; telling the New York Times 27 October 1912: "The model tenements are too expensive. They are built for the very poor, but the very poor do not live in them. They can't afford it". - AsNotedIn
