Susana Machado Residence is a 10,000-square-foot, 35 room mansion. When first built, it included a billiard room, drawing room, gymnasium, library, wine room and, of course, servants quarters. Susana Machado was married to Jean Bernard, a wealthy Swiss-French businessman and was the mother of 11 children. She lived in her Westlake home until she died in 1907 and the residence remained in the Bernard family until 1962. The Casa Libre/Freedom House currently offers an emergency and transitional living shelter program for homeless children under the age of 18 years.
