1861/00/00 Col William H Hoffman Architect In late 1861, Federal officials select Johnson's Island as the site for a prisoner of war camp to hold up to 2,500 captured Confederate officers.
1862/04/00 Gen William S Pierson Jr US Army Commander Major William S Pierson takes command of the first Confederate prisoners at Johnson's Island, numbering between 500 and 600.
1863/00/00 Confederate Captain Charles H Cole escapes from Johnson Island to Canada.
1864/01/18 Gen William S Pierson Jr US Army Commander William S Pierson, of the 128th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, is replaced by General Harry D Terry as commander of the guards of Johnson's Island Prison.
1864/06/12 Stephen Wiley Brewer Military Capt Brewer writes a letter to his brother-in-law, Richard Bray Paschal, the sheriff of Chatham county, North Carolina: Lt Murdock McLeod wrote that Col John T Jones was wounded the 6th in the Battle of the Wilderness and died the 7th.
1864/11/00 Henry Gray Turner Confederate Captain Captain Henry G Turner of Company H is released as disabled and returns to Georgia.
1865/09/05 The last Johnson Island prisoners are transferred and the facility prepares for closing. Over the course operations, Johson Island held 15,000 Confederates, of the 3000 officers, seven were generals.
