Vinkenbaan 14, designed by Hana H, H J Harms and architect H P Berlage, is the first house in the Netherlands constructed of cast-in-place concrete. The concrete was formed using cast iron molds patented by US inventor, Thomas A Edison, on 13 August 1908. Edison intended that the structure of the house, including walls, roofs, stairs and ornamentation could be built with one pour of cement. The plan was to efficiently construct inexpensive homes that were "practically indestructible and perfectly sanitary" since the casings could be "taken to pieces and removed and used repeatedly for the construction of an indefinite number of houses." Unfortunately, the cast iron shells the size of a two story house proved to be too heavy and expensive to work with. - AsNotedIn
