Castello di Sarre
From a rise towards the Aosta valley, the Royal Castle of Sarre dominates the access to the upper valley.
After several changes of ownership, Vittorio Emanuele II, who made it his hunting lodge, was acquired by the king of Italy. The current building, which includes an older nucleus arranged around the square tower, was built in the early eighteenth century. Since 1989 it has been owned by the Autonomous Region of Valle d'Aosta, which has taken care of its restoration and museum layout.
On the ground floor the Reception Gallery houses the portraits, paintings or sculptures, of the components of the Savoy family; the other rooms are instead dedicated to hunting and illustrate the organization and techniques with which this activity was exercised by the court. On the first floor there are the rooms of the royal apartment with the impressive Gallery and the vast Hall, decorated by the will of Umberto I of Savoy with the hunting trophies. On the second floor is the history of the Savoy dynasty during the 20th century. - Valle d'Aosta
