1234/04/00 Franciscan Custodian St Francis Abbey is established as a small rectangular chapel between 1231 and April 1234 by Richard Marshal, 3rd Earl of Pembroke.
1705/00/00 Smithwick's and Sons Brewery Established John Smithwick establishes a brewery with Richard Cole. Cole leased the land from the Duke of Ormond in 1705, who lived in Kilkenny Castle. The brewery is situated on the site of the St Francis Abbey, where monks had brewed ale since the 14th century.
1827/00/00 Smithwick's and Sons Brewery After John Smithwick's death, the brewery is removed from family ownership. In 1827, John Smithwick's great grandson, Edmond buys the brewery. Under his leadership, trade increased in 10 years from 5,000 barrels to 40,000 barrels in 1860.
1847/00/00 Smithwick's and Sons Brewery Benefactor During the Great Famine, Edmond and rival brewer Richard Sullivan put competition aside to set up a soup kitchen. Edmond also will contribute to the building of St Mary's Cathedral and is a supporter of Catholic Emancipation. Great Irish Famine
