Cream City Brick is a light-yellow building brick produced from the glacial clay deposits found around Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Unlike most clays, which fire to red or brown because of high iron content, Milwaukee's clay — mined in the Menomonee River Valley and along Lake Michigan — contains unusually high levels of magnesium and calcium. When fired at high temperatures, these minerals dilute the iron and chemically react to create the brick's characteristic soft, pale-yellow-buff color. Throughout the 19th century, Cream City brick becomes a defining architectural material of Milwaukee, used in warehouses, breweries, commercial blocks and worker housing across the city. - AsNotedIn
