Category: Structure

A fan vault is a distinctive form of late medieval English vaulting in which the ribs radiate evenly from slender shafts, forming conical or fanned shapes that create a continuous, unified pattern across the ceiling. Unlike earlier rib vaults, where ribs carry structural priority, fan vaults treat all ribs as equal, generating a smooth, geometrically regular surface often enriched with tracery, bosses, or pendants. Developed in the Perpendicular Gothic period, the type reached its fullest expression in royal and collegiate works such as St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle. Its refined symmetry and ornamental richness make the fan vault one of the most celebrated achievements of English Gothic architecture. - AsNotedIn
