The Battle of Belleau Wood was fought from 1 to 26 June 1918 near Chateau-Thierry along the Marne River, where US Army units of the 2nd and 3rd Divisions and the 4th Marine Brigade halted the German Spring Offensive. American forces endured heavy machine-gun and rifle fire andmdash; most famously during the 6 June assault across open wheat fields andmdash; and fought through weeks of close-quarters combat to clear the forest sector by sector.
