Nathaniel Tracy, one of the wealthiest merchants in the American colonies during the American Revolution, supported The Patriots by outfitting twenty-five privateer cruisers that captured more than 120 British vessels and inflicting an estimated $3 million in losses. His privateers seized prisoners, vital supplies and disrupted British commerce. Tracy also loaned $167,000 to the Revolutionary government and provisioned the Continental Army. In the volatile postwar economy — burdened by unpaid government debts and the destruction of much of his merchant fleet — he spent the final decade of his life in bankruptcy. - AsNotedIn
