Julius Vines served in the US Army during World War II, beginning with his induction at Fort Benning in 1943 and later assignment to the Army Medical Corps at Camp Atterbury. His skills as a driver and mechanic placed him in ambulance service on the front lines at a time when African-American soldiers were rarely sent into combat zones. Vines took part in major European operations, including the D-Day invasion and the Battle of the Bulge, and later crossed the Rhine with Patton's Third Army, where he witnessed the aftermath of a Nazi concentration camp.
