Joseph Lamson was a highly influential early New England gravestone carver whose work is considered among the first in the region to include early portrait-like effigies on slate markers. Some of his stones, such as Jonathan Pierpont's carved in 1709, show carved figures intended as more life-like representations rather than the purely symbolic skulls and winged heads common earlier, making them among the earliest portrait-style effigies in New England gravestone art. - AsNotedIn
