Emil Frei was a Bavarian-born stained-glass artist who became one of the most influential figures in American ecclesiastical art during the early twentieth century. After immigrating to the United States, he founded Emil Frei Studios in St Louis, a workshop that quickly earned a national reputation for craftsmanship, innovation and the ability to blend European traditions with American architectural styles. Frei developed a method for transferring images to glass using photographic and silk screen techniques. His work appears in churches across the country, including the stained-glass windows of Holy Angels Church.
