Gen Gurdon Saltonstall
American
The 67 year old General in the American Revolutionary War
Gurdon Saltonstall Jr was a New London-born colonial officer who rose to prominence during the early years of the American Revolution. Initially commissioned as colonel of the 3rd Connecticut militia regiment in 1775, he was appointed brigadier general the following year and led nine eastern Connecticut regiments in the New York campaigns. He later commanded the 3rd Connecticut Brigade of militia until resigning in 1777. A son of Governor Gurdon Saltonstall, he was interred in the family's subterranean vault at New London's Ancient Cemetery — a freestone-topped tomb excavated in 1710 and long used as the resting place for multiple generations of the Saltonstall line. - AsNotedIn
