Joseph Manigault
American
Joseph Manigault, born in 1763 into the influential Wragg-Manigault family of Charles Town, emerges as a figure shaped by Huguenot heritage, inherited wealth, and the educational ambitions of South Carolina's elite. Raised by his grandparents after the early death of his parents, he studied abroad in England and Geneva before returning home to manage extensive plantations and a prominent Meeting Street residence. His public life included service in the South Carolina General Assembly, and his private world connected him to the Middleton and Drayton families through marriage. His long career as planter, legislator, and Charleston host reflects the social and economic networks that defined the Lowcountry in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. - AsNotedIn
