Charles Westfield Coker

A member of one of the state's best known families, Mr Coker had served as mayor of Hartsville, senator from Darlington County, a member of the state board of public welfare and a member of the state tax commission. He had held other public positions of honor and was particularly active during his lifetime in efforts to aid the unfortunate, being largely instrumental in the establishment of the tuberculosis sanatorium of this county. At the time of his death, he was president of the Sonoco Products Company, of Hartsville, president of the chamber of commerce, and had other business enterprises in this section. He was vice-chairman of the South Carolina power rate investigating committee and was district chairman of the South Carolina Progress Association. - Obituary: Spartanburg Herald

Camp Coker Boy Scout camp near Society Hill, SC was named in his memory after his death. It was founded as Camp Pee Dee in 1929 and the name was changed to Camp Coker before the summer of 1932.
