William B Caton was a veteran of the American Civil War and a prominent Kansas businessman. Enlisting in the Missouri State Militia at just thirteen years old, he joined Company E of the Merrill's Horse (2nd Missouri Cavalry) in 1862 as a bugler. He served for three years in the regular army, participating in all major engagements of his command before being mustered out in October 1865. Following the war, Caton mastered the marble trade and eventually moved to Kansas, where he founded the Canton Marble Works in Winfield. - AsNotedIn
