William Henry Drayton, eldest son of John Drayton of Charleston and his wife Charlotta Bull, daughter of the Royal Lieutenant Governor William Bull, was born into the foremost ranks of South Carolina society. Endowed with both education and ambition, he rose swiftly in the public councils of his province. As President of the South Carolina Provincial Congress and later as the colony's Representative to the Continental Congress from 1778 until his death in 1779, he proved indefatigable in the service of American liberty, distinguishing himself by his labors on nearly ninety committees and by the vigor of his political writings and debates. - AsNotedIn
