Gov Gurdon Saltonstall
Massachusetts Bay Colony
Pastor and Governor of Colonial Connecticut
Gurdon Saltonstall was a colonial clergyman and statesman who served as Governor of Connecticut from 1708 until his death. Born in Haverhill, Massachusetts, he graduated from Harvard before becoming minister of New London's First Congregational Church, where his close relationship with Governor John Winthrop positioned him for political leadership. Elected governor after Winthrop's death, Saltonstall proved a conservative administrator who strengthened ties with England, supported military action during Queen Anne's War, and enforced doctrinal unity through the Saybrook Platform. Though viewed by some as severe, he remained widely popular and held office for sixteen years. Saltonstall is buried in New London's Ancient Cemetery, where his family tomb stands as one of the most prominent colonial vaults in New England. - AsNotedIn
