John Richard Wingfield

John Richard Wingfield was a Virginia lawyer, politician, and diplomat from Albemarle County. He served in the 2nd Virginia Cavalry for the Confederate States Army during the Civil War and was wounded at the Battle of the Wilderness. After the war, he studied law at the University of Virginia School of Law and became a practicing attorney. Wingfield held local office on the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors and was later elected to the Virginia State Senate. He was appointed US Consul to Costa Rica by President Grover Cleveland, and after his diplomatic service returned to Albemarle County, where he remained active in law, farming and civic affairs. - AsNotedIn
