  • English

Stephen Bull, a gentleman of skill and enterprise, came into the Province of Carolina in the year 1670, sailing from England aboard the CAROLINA in company with his brother Burnaby. Soon after his arrival he established himself at Ashley Hall upon the Ashley River, where he became one of the most useful servants of the infant colony. Gifted in the arts of surveying and fortification, he was appointed Master of Survey for the province and served likewise as engineer of the Charles Town forts. In these capacities he rendered faithful service to the Earl of Shaftesbury, Anthony Ashley-Cooper, acting as his deputy and advancing the Proprietors' designs in the settlement and defense of Carolina. - AsNotedIn
